Autism Friendly Communication Cards

The Autism Friendly Communication Cards are designed to support clear, respectful communication in everyday situations. This Autistic-led initiative has been co-designed in partnership with Autistic individuals, ensuring the cards reflect real lived experience and practical needs. The cards are high-quality cardboard finish, and will come with a plastic sleeve that can be attached to a lanyard or placed inside a wallet/purse.

What are Communication Cards?

The Autism Friendly Communication Cards use a simple red, yellow and green system to help communicate your preferences to others quickly and clearly.

They are designed to:

Support understanding in everyday interactions

Reduce the pressure of verbal communication

Help others respond in a way that works for you

Like Aspect’s Alert Cards, which help communicate support needs in challenging situations , these cards extend that support into daily environments and social interactions.

How do they work?

Each card represents a different communication preference:

🔴 Not right now – Please don’t approach me or speak to me
🟡 Only if I know you – If we know each other, please come talk to me. I am not up for speaking to new people right now.
🟢 Come talk to me – I am open and willing to chat and network. Come and talk to me!

Cards can be:

Worn on a lanyard for visibility
Kept in a wallet or card holder
Easily shown when needed

Who are they for?

These cards are ideal for Autistic individuals who want to express their communication preferences in a simple, accessible way.

They can be used in a range of everyday situations, including:

Attending events or conferences
In the workplace
Using public transport
Visiting public spaces like libraries, museums and more
