Eye health is particularly important for Autistic people as studies show they are more likely to experience conditions like refractive errors (vision correction needs), strabismus (crossed eyes), and amblyopia (lazy eye).
Yet Autistic people often experience extra barriers accessing eye care. Sensory sensitivities, communication differences and a lack of understanding from providers can make the experience prohibitively stressful and lead to unmet health needs.
To help address this issue, with your support, our team is working with the Autistic community to identify the experiences of Autistic people receiving care, the experience of eye-care professionals working with Autistic people, and vitally, ways to make the experience more inclusive and accessible.
