Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia) is proud to partner with Disney Theatrical Group to bring a relaxed performance of the internationally acclaimed musical THE LION KING to Sydney audiences. Taking place at the Capitol Theatre on Saturday 29 August 2026 at 1:30pm, this special performance has been thoughtfully adapted to create a more inclusive, supportive and welcoming theatre experience for Autistic individuals and others who may benefit from a relaxed environment.
What is a relaxed performance?
Relaxed performances are designed to remove common barriers to attending live theatre. Audience members are encouraged to enjoy the show in a way that feels comfortable for them — whether that means moving around, making sounds, fidgeting, or using noise-cancelling headphones.
Working closely with Disney, Aspect’s Autistic staff have provided consultation to ensure the performance considers a wide range of sensory and accessibility needs. A number of adjustments will be in place across the entire experience — from booking tickets through to the final curtain.
These include:
- A detailed visual story to help audiences prepare for the performance step-by-step
- Inclusive and supportive language across the ticketing and website experience
- Additional trained staff and volunteers available throughout the venue
- Removal of loud or unexpected announcements
- Access to a dedicated quiet room and multiple low-sensory spaces for breaks
There will also be thoughtful adjustments to the production itself, including reduced sound levels, dimmed house lights remaining on during the performance, and visual cues to provide gentle ‘pre-warnings’ ahead of potentially overwhelming moments.
A short pre-show welcome will introduce key characters and stage elements in an accessible and reassuring way, helping audiences feel more comfortable and prepared before the performance begins.
Following the success of previous relaxed performances, including Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, this collaboration continues to demonstrate what’s possible when accessibility and inclusion are prioritised in major cultural events.
Tickets for the relaxed performance will be available across a range of price points — $65, $90, $120, $160 and $200, with no additional booking fees.
This initiative reflects a shared commitment between Aspect and Disney to creating environments where everyone can experience the magic of live theatre in a way that works for them.
