Dr Vicki Gibbs, Head of Research, Aspect said:
“Aspect is aware of today’s report regarding an increase in autism diagnoses among children accessing the NDIS.
“It’s important to recognise that the number of children diagnosed with autism in Australia and overseas has been steadily increasing over the past 10 to 15 years as awareness has grown and diagnostic and screening tools have been improved. The figure reported today in regards to the number of children accessing the NDIS with an autism diagnosis - 1 in 27 – is comparable to estimates from a number of other recent studies both here and internationally (e.g. US CDC estimate of 1 in 31).
“Much of the increase in diagnostic rates has been attributed to better recognition, particularly among girls, children with subtler autism presentations, strong cognitive abilities, and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who historically went undiagnosed. For many individuals and families, a diagnosis provides clarity, validation and access to appropriate supports that can significantly improve wellbeing and long-term outcomes.
“While policy settings surrounding the NDIS may encourage families to come forward for assessment, this represents people now having a reason to seek recognition and support that previously wasn’t available. It is essential that public conversation does not cast doubt on legitimate diagnoses
“Aspect will continue to advocate for a greater understanding of autism and for systems - including health and education - that support Autistic people to thrive across all stages of life.”
