Jacqui Borland, CEO, Aspect said:

“Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia) notes the Government’s release of the Thriving Kids foundational supports model as a step towards reshaping early supports for children with developmental delay or disability, including many children on the autism spectrum.

“The model’s focus on earlier identification of developmental differences and delivering supports through community settings such as health, early childhood education and schools reflects long-standing calls for simpler pathways that allow families to access help earlier, without needing to wait for a formal diagnosis.

“Central to Aspect’s vision is that children and their families and carers receive the right support, at the right time, in the right place. This means timely, functional and evidence-informed supports embedded in everyday environments where children live, learn and play.

“Aspect has consistently highlighted that for Thriving Kids to succeed, it must be developed in partnership with Autistic people, families and experienced service providers, and supported by a capable workforce. While Aspect supports the intent and principles underpinning the Thriving Kids model, we look forward to further detail on how these principles will be operationalised in practice, including program design, delivery mechanisms and accountability arrangements.

“The model’s intention to sit alongside the NDIS, with children with more complex support needs continuing to access individualised funding, will require strong coordination between systems and clear pathways so children do not fall through the gaps.

“Sustained Commonwealth and state funding will also be critical to ensure services are accessible and consistent across all communities, including regional and remote areas.

“Aspect recognises that system change can create uncertainty for families, and that many may be feeling nervous about how new arrangements will work in practice. Clear communication, continuity of support and careful transition planning will be essential to maintain confidence and avoid disruption for children and families.

“Aspect will continue working with state and federal governments to help ensure the program delivers practical, evidence-informed and family-centred outcomes.”
