Disney and Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) are partnering to bring you a special autism friendly performance of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. We are thrilled to announce a one-of-a-kind opportunity for families seeking a sensory-friendly theatre experience which will take place on Saturday 18 November 2023, at 1:30 pm at Sydney's Capitol Theatre.

A Timeless Classic Reimagined

Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions (Aladdin, The Lion King, Mary Poppins, Frozen) this new production of Beauty and the Beast brings back members of the original creative team from the ground-breaking Broadway musical to reimagine this much-loved classic tale.

Based on the 1991 animated film, the original production of Beauty and the Beast played for more than 13 years on Broadway, remaining to this day one of the top 10 longest running shows in Broadway history, and touring to 37 countries worldwide. Sydney audiences will rejoice in the spellbinding songs of Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice including Belle, Gaston, Human Again and Be Our Guest.

Creating a Comfortable and Inclusive Theatre Experience: What to Expect at the Relaxed Performance

At this performance, audience members will be encouraged to be completely themselves during the show - to make sounds, move around, fidget or use noise cancelling headphones.

Based on an assessment by Aspect’s autism-friendly team, modifications will be made to the show, foyers and the entire experience, to consider and care for those who may need specific supports.

There will be extra staff on hand and dedicated quiet areas. Before the performance, a pre-show welcome will take place (introducing some of the characters, sensory-significant scenes and volume of the orchestra). During the performance, nuanced adjustments will be made to both the lighting and sound levels to accommodate sensory sensitivities, ensuring a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for all attendees.

Our partnership with Disney means a comfortable and inclusive experience for all! Beauty and the Beast is suitable for a general audience. As it is a full-length musical of 2 hours and 30 minutes (including a 20-minute interval), it is recommended for ages 6 and up.
