Our legacy: Where we began

Aspect began in 1966 as a small parent-led initiative to start a school at a time when autism was poorly understood, and services were virtually non-existent. That determination to create change has guided our growth ever since. Over nearly six decades, we’ve evolved into a national organisation that delivers one of the world’s largest autism-specific education programs, alongside leading therapy, assessment and adult support services.
A major milestone has been the sheer scale of demand. As autism diagnosis has increased, so too has the need for services. In 2005, Aspect delivered just 66 autism assessments with three staff. By 2024, that number had grown to 784 assessments supported by a team of 26. And it’s not just the numbers that have changed, so has the profile of those seeking support. Where we once mostly assessed young children, we now see people across the lifespan, including teenagers, adults and even people in their 60s and 70s.
That growing demand transformed our therapy and education services. In 2005, we supported 159 therapy participants with a team of eight. Last year, that grew to over 1,620 participants and 91 staff. Our schools have expanded significantly from one in 1967 to 10 schools in 2025 with more than 100 satellite classes in mainstream public, independent and catholic schools in NSW.
