School transitions are part of every student’s educational journey. From starting school, moving from primary to secondary settings, or preparing for post-school pathways, these changes can bring both opportunity and uncertainty for Autistic students and their families.
Transitions also occur in smaller but equally important ways throughout the school day and across each term, such as moving between activities, classrooms, people and expectations. When routines change unexpectedly or what comes next is unclear, students may experience increased stress or anxiety, impacting their sense of safety, regulation and readiness to learn. Thoughtful planning, predictable routines and supportive environments can help students feel more connected, confident and ready to engage in learning.
Preparation is also an important part of successful transitions. Taking time to understand a student’s communication style, sensory preferences, strengths, interests and support needs allows schools and families to work together to create more positive and individualised transition experiences. Familiar supports such as social stories, visual cues and structured routines can help reduce uncertainty and support regulation during periods of change.
These themes will be explored further at Aspect’s upcoming online Community of Practice event on 10 June 2026: Navigating transitions across the learning lifespan.
Community of Practice brings together educators, families, allied health professionals, school leaders and lived-experience voices to share practical strategies, evidence-informed approaches and real-world experiences that strengthen inclusive education for Autistic learners.
