Guided by artist and parent Shanae Hunter, students from our Aspect satellite class at Briar Road Public School joined the mainstream students to learn about the Aboriginal language Dharawal.

Using handprints and the iconic Aboriginal dot painting style, they crafted a beautiful artwork honouring the great sea turtle, Gudhamaang. Beyond the artistic journey, Aspect students also eagerly absorbed information surrounding the Dharawal language.

During National Reconciliation Week, the students also delved into the beauty and cultural significance of the Dharawal language and learnt how language, stories and nature intertwine. National Reconciliation Week is observed annually across Australia from May 27th to June 3rd and is a time for reflection, learning and celebration of Indigenous culture. The students’ exploration of the Dharawal language and artwork showcases the transformative power of education, cultural exchange and art in building cultural unity and understanding.
