The integration of Alpha Autism’s services in Victoria into Aspect
Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) and Alpha Autism and have been in discussions over the past eighteen months, resulting in an exciting plan to integrate Alpha’s services into Aspect’s. Aspect will assume full responsibility for these services from 1 December 2014. This significant change will secure the important work Alpha has done for so many years with people with autism for the future.
Staff and clients of Alpha Autism are warmly welcomed to the Aspect community with the integration of the two organisations announced today. Services will continue as usual, with existing staff continuing to support the 110 Alpha Autism clients and their families across five centres in Victoria.
Jenny Young, the Chair of the Aspect Board said, “It is a privilege and an honour to announce to the Aspect community this important decision reached by the Aspect and Alpha Boards. Throughout out the discussions between the two organisations the focus has been on achieving the best outcomes for the adults with autism and their families who have been served so well by Alpha Autism for so many years. At the same time we both knew that with all the change in the disability field due to the coming of the NDIS, things were needing to change to make sure this work could continue.”
Aspect CEO Adrian Ford said, “The natural synergy between Alpha Autism and Aspect in terms of values, a person-centred approach and commitment to the people we support, made it an obvious progression to integrate Alpha’s services into Aspect’s.”
Adrian added, “We are also very excited to be expanding our offerings for adults with autism in Victoria. As we work with the current centres, we plan over time to provide more choice in the services and programs available through our adults program known as Aspect Choose and Connect.”
Aspect Choose & Connect provides person-centred programs, working with individuals’ special interests and with the community. In NSW, recent community programs have included voluntary work at Meals on Wheels, at major supermarkets, photography and writing workshops, gardening opportunities, music programs and more. In Chose & Connect we consider the needs and abilities of each individual to provide a person-centred approach to the services we provide.
Established in 1966, Aspect is Australia’s largest autism-specific service provider, supporting more than 10,000 children, young people and adults across Australia every year. Through Aspect’s Victoria office, established at Moonee Ponds in 2009, Aspect provides autism-specific support programs and consultancies to the Victorian Education Department (DEECD), as well as positive behaviour support, early intervention and Aspect Practice services, including workshops, training, resources, educational outreach and more. The integration of Alpha’s services into Aspect greatly expands Aspect’s operations in Victoria by including work with adults with autism and their families.
