Extreme Male Brain Theory

Kelly Hanrahan through the University of New England is studying Social Science (Psychology) Honours. Kelly is investigating the Extreme Male Brain Theory, which suggests that people diagnosed with autism and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) display an extreme male cognitive (thinking) brain. Biological studies have suggested that high levels of testosterone levels (a male hormone) released early in pregnancy could lead to autism and ASD. When this happens the baby regardless of whether it is a boy or girl develops an extreme male brain type that has been seen to match the different types of autism and ASD.

What is an extreme male brain?

Generally all males and females have slightly different cognitive (thinking) brain types, and previous research studies have revealed that females display a social thinking brain with a less spatial (calculating) thinking brain, while males are the opposite. Spatial thinking, is shown by people who can easily match or calculate numbers, find or make shapes quickly from pictures, or remembering calendar dates and years or names. Autism and ASD thinking brains show an extreme male brain type, whereby a low social thinking brain with a high spatial thinking brain is displayed.

How will the extreme male brain be investigated?

By utilising previous psychological, physiological and biological research findings, Kelly Hanrahan will carry out all aspects of the study. You will be asked to come to an appointment at the Centre of Developmental Disability Studies located at Sydney to participate in this study.

How can you participate?

This study is asking for participants aged from 10 years to any age in adulthood, with a diagnosis of autism or an autism spectrum disorder not associated with any other disorder.
