The Aspect Behaviour Intervention Service is a specialist home-based service for families and carers living in the Western Sydney area who support young people with a diagnosed disability and have an emerging or current challenging behaviour. The service is funded to support a limited number of families each year by Ageing, Disability and Home Care, NSW Department of Human Services.
The Aspect Behaviour Intervention Service adopts a family-centred positive behaviour support approach when working with clients. This approach places emphasis on developing a comprehensive behaviour support plan through: • collaborative partnerships with parents, schools, and other professionals aiming to build knowledge and skills and • collecting information to help analyse the ‘function’ of challenging behaviour (i.e. what makes it keep happening)
The Aspect Behaviour Intervention Service employs specialist staff to work with families during a 3 day workshop, and up to 5 home-based sessions to:
- train families in autism-specific positive behaviour support strategies at the start of service
- set clear goals to identify the needs and priorities of families
- give families the tools to develop a functional understanding of challenging behaviour
- develop a comprehensive behaviour intervention plan
- learn how to make and use resources to promote positive behaviour (e.g. supports for communication, visual timetables, social stories, rules and reward systems etc)
- help promote skills such as emotional regulation (e.g. anger management) and social skills
- provide or link families to other service providers supports and resources if required
- provide the family with a letter that explains about the work completed and helps them address any future challenges should they arise
- review the service to promote good quality, family-centred service delivery
