Aspect Educational Outreach courses 

 

Aspect Educational Outreach provides Professional Development courses which are presented by Special Educators who work exclusively in the field of autism education. The courses offer practical, evidence-based interventions and opportunities for problem-solving and discussion.


Aspect Educational Outreach is a specialist education unit which works within an inclusive model of service provision for mainstream school-aged children with an autism spectrum disorder. Services provided include individual client consultancy and staff L&D, group social skills programs, diagnosis disclosure and peer education programs and recreational Social Clubs.

 

 

Courses

 

These full day courses, which are accredited with the NSW Institute of Teachers, are primarily for teachers, special support personnel and other professionals supporting students with ASD. Parents/carers are also welcome to attend, but should be advised that the content focuses entirely on school-based planning and support.

 

Introduction to ASD and Mainstream School Strategies (K-6 focus)

 

The course offers an overview of ASD, its features and impact on student functioning in integrated learning and social environments. Comprehensive support strategies are explained within a Positive Behaviour Support framework.  Opportunities for discussion and problem solving make this an engaging and practical course. 

 

Course topics include:

  • Overview of ASD, especially high functioning autism (HFA) /Asperger’s Disorder
  • Thinking and learning  styles of children with HFA/Asperger’s Disorder
  • A systematic approach to the implementation of support strategies for behavioural, social, learning, communication and sensory-motor needs in classroom and playground settings.

Overview of ASD and Practical Social Support Strategies (K-6 focus) 

 

The course offers an overview of ASD, especially HFA/Asperger’s with particular focus on social impairments and implications for social inclusion. Interventions are explained within a Positive Behaviour Support framework and include:

  • Practical proactive social support strategies for the classroom.
  • Social stories, social scripts and comic strip conversation
  • Playground/break-time programming
  • Diagnosis disclosure
  • Peer education
  • Implementing group social skills programs
  • Recreational social clubs options

Supporting Adolescents with High Functioning Autism/Asperger’s Disorder

 

The course offers a comprehensive overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder, with particular focus on HFA/Asperger’s Disorder, its features and its impact on student’s learning, social integration, communication and behaviour in mainstream secondary school settings (Yr 7 to Yr 12).  Practical support strategies are explained within a Positive Behaviour Support framework.  Opportunities for discussion and problem solving make this an engaging and interactive day.

 

Course topics include:

  • The normal development issues of adolescence
  • Specific challenges of adolescence faced by young people with HFA/Asperger’s disorder
  • Challenges faced by adolescents with HFA/Asperger’s disorder in mainstream high schools
